Information Literacy Project (ILP)

Information literacy is about helping citizens develop critical thinking skills in locating, using, and evaluating information. Briefly, the project goals are to:

  • Raise awareness in the library community about the library's role in communicating information literacy concepts

  • Develop a specific set of information literacy tools for library staff

  • Conduct information literacy training sessions throughout the state for library staff

  • Fund a massive statewide publicity campaign to get the public to use the information literacy services of libraries

Project Timeline and Goals:
This is a three-year project which has received over $400,000 in federal funding, with $200,000 set aside for publicity and marketing.

In year one, FY2000, a statewide planning committee was organized to establish information literacy standards and to develop a project plan.

In year two, FY2001, the Project initiated a statewide information literacy training program as well as an extensive program of marketing to all Washington citizens.

During its final year, FY 2002, the Project offered a new series of advanced information literacy workshops for staff, conducted an assessment of the training program and designed a plan to sustain the project's activities.
